Farm 215 is a small-scale operation offering luxury, tranquility, privacy, space, original food and the exceptional beauty of the Cape Flora in an astonishing landscape.
The reserve is the base station of the African Horse Company, organizing outrides in and around the reserve and multi-day treks through the Southern Overberg.
The accommodation is arranged along a hill and enjoys panoramic views over the plains towards the ocean, the vineyards and lake of our neighbor and Walker Bay Conservancy co-member Lomond Estate, and rows and rows of inland mountains. Surrounded by a pristine private nature reserve of 800 hectares, farm 215 is a shelter from the daily routines of life and a haven for the conscious traveler.
Guided horse trails and guided botanical walks in the reserve can be arranged.
Sustainable hospitality is farm 215’s trademark. Farm 215 is the Winner of the Cape Fox Award 2007 for best stewardship of land in the Western Cape and is certified by Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa.
The reserve is a rare sanctuary for hundreds of plant species, a haven for numerous bird- and animal-species, an important local catchment area and an essential meeting place of different vegetation types, including indigenous forest remains and a remnant of endangered “Elim-astereceous fynbos”.
Vast tracts of the reserve have been cleared from alien invasive vegetation and old farmland, wetlands and streambanks have been rehabilitated to its natural state. All new buildings blend in with the natural landscape and the new guesthouse infrastructure has been designed to minimize impact on the natural environment. Farm 215’s focus on sustainable technology has resulted in solar power generation, harnessing of surplus heat, worm-bin composting and recycling of grey water and waste. Strict conservation management policies are applied. Harmful chemicals are not used and harvesting of indigenous flowers on a small part in the reserve is done in accordance with sustainable harvesting practices by co-Walker Bay Conservancy member Flower Valley Trust.
Farm 215 is a place to tread lightly. As a result there are only six guest-units, three in the old homestead and three freestanding and spaced-out suites. All units have a bathroom en suite with a bath and a separate shower. All units have a fireplace or a woodstove, ceiling fan and cd player. Linen is 100% cotton percale and bedding and pillows are goose-down filled. Both the rooms and the suites are spacious but uncluttered. A 25 m lap-pool with sundeck is reached via a wooden boardwalk from the dining and bar area. All rooms and suites have undisturbed and sweeping views.
Sustainable principles also rule the kitchen of farm 215: where possible ingredients are organic, in any case always local and always fresh. Wines are local as well and made by members of the Biodiversity Wine Initiative. Food is a matter that should be dealt with without any haste. Good food is slow food, made with an eye to detail and at nature’s pace. Dinner is in any case not served before it is dark and is dished in a protracted manner. Farm 215 is a place for the non-hasty. The chef decides what you will have for dinner.
